Methodology

Each street-level incident published by West Yorkshire Police is weighted by severity — violence counts for more than shoplifting. For every ward we sum weighted incidents within 1 km of its centre, and normalise against Leeds's own rates onto a 0–100 index, higher = safer. Boundaries are the 33 Leeds City Council wards from the ONS ward set. The scale is calibrated to Leeds and cannot be read against another city's number — a Leeds 55 and a London 55 both mean “typical for this city”, not the same amount of crime. Leeds wards are large by British standards — the council area is 552 km², so an outer ward can span a town, a village and several miles of farmland — and this index describes the kilometre around each ward's centre rather than the whole ward. Where the published centre sat in open country rather than in the built-up part of a ward, it has been moved onto the town or village the ward is named for. data.police.uk publishes one calendar month at a time, so these pages describe a single month rather than a year, and small differences between neighbouring wards are not meaningful. Time-of-day charts use the category mix, as data.police.uk does not publish incident times. Pages regenerate as new data is published.

The index compares areas within Leeds. It is not comparable between cities: each police force publishes a different set of offences over a different period — Leeds's figures cannot be read against another city's on the same 0–100 scale.
